Our Equine Law Practice

Equine law spans many areas of business and litigation and frequently requires an understanding of how industry practices intersect with legal standards, valuation principles, and evidentiary requirements. We regularly advise and represent clients in matters involving:

  • Sales and Leases – Preventing and resolving disputes involving nondisclosure, soundness, valuation, or misrepresentation.
  • Co-Ownership and Syndications – Structuring agreements addressing voting rights, expense and profit sharing, valuation of ownership interests, and exit strategies.
  • Boarding and Training – Drafting contracts, resolving unpaid board or training disputes, and minimizing liability exposure.
  • Injury and Liability – Litigating negligence and other legal claims under state equine activity statutes, including disputes involving damages and loss valuation.
  • Breeding and Registration – Preparing breeding agreements, addressing semen quality disputes, and resolving parentage or registry challenges.
  • Regulatory & Show Matters – Responding to rule violations, disciplinary proceedings, and competition or breed agency matters, including proceedings before United States Equestrian Federation and Fédération Équestre Internationale.
  • Employment and Labor – Advising barns and owners on worker classification, workers’ compensation, and wage and hour compliance.
  • Asset Protection, Insurance & Appraisal – Ensuring appropriate insurance coverage, litigating coverage disputes, and providing equine appraisal and valuation services relevant to claims, transactions, and ownership disputes.
  • Rescues & Nonprofits – Supporting nonprofit organizations with governance, liability, compliance, and risk management issues.

Equine Appraisal & Valuation Services

Accurate equine valuation is often central to resolving equine disputes and structuring high-value transactions. As part of our equine law practice, TCBG provides professional equine appraisal and valuation services to support litigation, insurance claims, ownership and partnership disputes, and transactional matters. Our appraisals are prepared with an understanding of how valuation evidence is evaluated by courts, insurers, and equestrian governing bodies.

We provide equine appraisals for purposes including insurance coverage and loss claims, sales and lease disputes, partnership and co-ownership matters, divorce and estate proceedings, charitable contributions, and business transactions. Appraisal services may include fair market value and fair value opinions, valuation consulting, and litigation support, all conducted in accordance with applicable professional standards and integrated into a broader legal strategy.

Who We Represent

Our clients include horse owners and investors buying, selling, and leasing performance, breeding, and pleasure horses; trainers, riders, and barn managers overseeing horse care and client relationships; breeders, stallion owners, and foaling specialists; show management and event venues responsible for safety, liability, and compliance; competitors at all levels in national and international equestrian sport; and veterinarians, farriers, and other equine professionals involved in professional negligence or malpractice claims.

While many of our clients are based in Florida’s major equestrian centers—Ocala, Wellington, and the surrounding areas—we regularly assist clients nationwide and internationally, coordinating with local counsel, insurers, governing bodies, and regulatory authorities wherever horses, people, or disputes may travel.

Transactions and Disputes

In addition to advising providing advice on forming and managing equine operations, we are also trial lawyers. Every agreement, valuation issue, correspondence, and pleading is prepared with the courtroom in mind. This approach creates leverage in negotiations and ensures clients are fully protected if litigation, arbitration, or regulatory proceedings become necessary.

Why It Matters

Equine disputes rarely fit neatly into one area of law. They often involve overlapping issues of property rights, insurance coverage, valuation, and the rules of equestrian sport-governing bodies. We understand how these issues intersect and how they are evaluated in real-world disputes. Our goal is simple: to protect the value of your horses, your business, and your reputation.

Ready to Protect Your Horse Investment?

Contracts, statutes, show rules, insurance policies, and accurate valuation—not barn etiquette or industry custom—determine responsibility when something goes wrong. We understand how much your horse and your investment mean to you. Protect yourself with experienced counsel and gain peace of mind knowing your equine-related interests are secure.
